In reply to Anshel. Hi Anshel, you can use this same method. Navy beans are more delicate and mild than pinto beans, so they will have a slightly different flavor and texture.

This recipe is easy and delicious ! I subbed the cilantro out with the parsley ( I have the unfortunate soap gene) and lemon instead of lime( what I had on hand. I used dry beans and soaked them overnight and then cooked them. Sure more work, but a made a BIG batch to use in my corn and bean salad also.

Pinto And black beans are not readily available in Europe. Can I use butter beans or white beans instead?

I love love love this recipe! The only thing I changed was to use dried beans, which I cooked in my Instant Pot, and instead of using olive oil I use bacon fat. So good! My family raves about these. Thank you for the recipe!

Very good flavor but nearly enough liquid. Next time I will use 1 cup instead of half a cup and even then, I might need to add more. I used better than bullion chicken broth instead of plain water.

I just moved out and am learning to cook, and these refried beans were super easy to make! They didn’t turn out quite as pretty as your pictures but they were super delicious. I had them as a side dish with shrimp tacos.
